Josh and Amy Dowdle are Lastlings, the Gold Coast sibling duo who have taken their place as new leaders in the sweet spot between live and electronic. The duo harbor a powerful, slow-burning energy and a deep dedication to their craft that has set them far and apart across today’s musical landscape. These Lastlings traits were likely inherited from their Japanese roots, impressed upon them throughout the trips they spent balancing the duality of the high-energy, electrified city of Tokyo and the tranquility of Aomori, a small fishing village on the northern side of the main island and their grandparents’ hometown.

Their debut album, First Contact, is a transcendent debut, and marks only the beginning for Lastlings -- a forward thinking duo and ultimate combination of art, tradition and determination. It’s an auspicious first glimpse into the universe, as built and told by Amy and Josh Dowdle, and a promise of what’s still yet to come.

Reverberating synths, propulsive rhythms and mesmerising vocals are at the heart of the sonic offering of Australian electronic duo Lastlings. Emerging brother and sister duo Amy and Josh pluck influences from their Japanese heritage, as well as dystopian postmodern literature and comic books, all feeding into their emotive smorgasbord of alt-pop. And their cinematic visual offerings veer from trippy to melancholic music videos.

Josh and his sister, Amy, 21, have just released their debut album, “First Contact,” with an anime-inspired three-minute video trailer shot entirely in Tokyo. Their studied poses, artful silhouettes and symmetric good looks set against metamorphosing cityscapes recall scenes from a psychedelic Satoshi Kon anime.

JAPAN TIMES | Sibling duo Lastlings finds its musical muse in Japan

The state of the world in 2020 is one that Lastlings, a half-Japanese, half-Australian musical sibling duo, seem oddly prepared for, right down to their name.

“Lastlings” was the title of a short story that guitarist and producer Josh Dowdle, 27, wrote in high school about the survivors of an apocalyptic event. Nature has reclaimed the cities, nothing is open and the “lastlings” are the only remaining people on Earth.

“We have a dystopian aesthetic,” Josh says on a video call from a studio in Australia. “I guess it’s a coincidence.”
