MUSICIAN, CREATIVE, MODEL

Drummer and vocalist for the eclectic indie band San Cisco, Scarlett Stevens is a creative force with a deep passion for music and championing female representation within the male-dominated industry of music.

Her art empowers her to feel most powerful, creative and feminine – she draws inspiration from women; female artists, activists, musicians, filmmakers and friends.

SCARLETT X RIMOWA

MARIE CLAIRE | GIRL OF THE MOMENT – Scarlett Stevens

“[Being labelled a “female” drummer] can feel limiting, but there are young girls who want to play the drums, so it’s important to speak honestly about succeeding in a male-dominated industry. While those labels can be annoying, we can embrace them; there’s nothing wrong with being a woman.”

BETWEEN YOU AND ME is the fourth album by the indie trio from Fremantle in Western Australia, town of sun-baked sandstone and sea breezes. It's an album two years and at least one sadly remembered love affair in the making.

BETWEEN YOU AND ME finds the childhood friends' open-hearted/ good times chemistry distilled to its essence. Nearly 10 years since their first EPs, ARIA nominations and early US and UK inroads, San Cisco have made their most painstaking album sound effortless.

RUSSH | Waiting for the weekend: on the road with Scarlett Stevens

From French 75s at Lucien, pre-show makeup application in Washington and endless diner-style filter coffee, RUSSH woman and San Cisco drummer, Scarlett Stevens, sends her favourite snaps from the band's US tour leg.

RUSSH

A Scorpio hailing from Australia's western coast, Stevens was initially a student of the piano before the film Josie and the Pussycats inspired her to first sit behind a drum kit. "I begged my parents to let me take lessons, and that film is what really started it for me," she recalls. "I guess drumming comes quite naturally to me. I feel pretty at ease behind the drums and that’s when I also feel the most ‘me’, and the most creative and feminine."

RUSSH | Note to self: friends of RUSSH write letters to their younger selves

For World Mental Health Day we asked our friends, muses and RUSSH contributors to write a letter to their younger selves. Collated and collaged by Contributing Editor Kitty Callaghan, these notes contain lessons, advice and affirmations for their past (and future) selves.

"My spotty self portrait for @russhmagazine’s latest issue ‘not alone’, a positively uplifting and hopeful read on finding connection in these crazy times."

COOL PRETTY COOL

Like most teenage girls coming of age in the early 2000s, Josie and the Pussycats was a formative viewing experience for San Cisco’s 27-year-old drummer and singer Scarlett Stevens. Unlike the majority, though, this movie—and Tara Reid’s character in particular—provided the impetus behind her now decade-and-a-half-spanning career as one of Australia’s most talented drummers.
